Bocce is an ancient precision sport that is widely played in Europe particularly in Italy. The sport was brought into North American and Australia by Italian migrants. Bocce court construction in the US doesn’t really follow standard rules. In fact, there are no hard and fast rules as far as the size of the court. For international bocce, however, equipment and courts follow a standard. If you’re going to play bocce for leisure, you can just construct a court that will fit your backyard and your budget. First, you want to decide whether you want to hire a contractor to build the court or you’d rather do it yourself. Some opt to go DIY on this project because you might be leaving a lot to chance particularly if the contractor is not even familiar with the game.
When it comes to bocce court construction, the surface is crucial. You want a hard packed, fast rolling surface for the court. The surface should be packed so that balls will roll fast and with minimal bounce across the court. The sport is traditionally played in an asphalt or natural soil court. Dimensions, according to international standards, are about 20 to 27 meters long and 2.4 to four meters wide. The court can be surrounded with wooden boards that are about 15 centimeters. It’s really easy to build a bocce court especially if you already have the right surface for it in your backyard. In fact, all you need to do is enclose a part of the area with wooden boards and pack in asphalt on the space and you’re all set. Back walls are important in bocce court construction because these features allow the ball to rebound instead of roll outside the court and to another end of your backyard.
