Caving is a popular recreational sport where people get kitted out with ropes, overalls and safety equipment and then enter the hidden dark depths of a cave to do the kind of exploring you dreamed about after watching Indiana Jones as a child. It’s an exciting and adrenaline filled activity that consists of negotiating a way through water rocks, tight squeezes and darker than dark tunnels. Caving was first pioneered in the late 1800s and now has become a popular sport all over the world with people getting together to spend their time exploring some magnificent and wonderful caves.
With most caving organisations when you arrive you’ll meet an instructor who will brief you about what to expect from the cave. Obviously due to their naturally formed nature, each cave is unique bringing with it different challenges and rewards for your stag party to enjoy. Some are wet caves and some are dry which will also affect what equipment you’ll need. Your instructor will also brief you on safety before kitting you out with the necessary equipment you will need for your stag weekend caving experience.
The equipment is very important when you’re caving, the clothes have to be the right pick to ensure you stay warm and dry. Your activity center will have all the equipment you need but it’s worth checking with them before you go in case they have any additional clothing requirements. Standard equipment is a helmet with a head lamp, overalls to keep you dry, boots to make sure you have suitable grip and protection against the caves environment and perhaps also ropes. Once you’re dressed and rigged out then you’re ready to take on your cave!
Expect a fair bit of darkness except for your headlight and depending on where you go you will face a number of different environments. The most common challenges a caver faces is navigating a pitch, traipsing through water, and squeezes. Wherever you go, you can bet it will be an experience like no other. This is an excellent activity for the stag group that like adventure and is ready for a real test of mental and physical strength. Caving isn’t for everyone, but if you have a group of people who get excited by a challenge and don’t mind small spaces, then this would make for an exciting and memorable stag weekend activity.
